ADA
Rocktown Yoga follows the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Health/Fitness Facility Standards and Guidelines for accessible facilities. This book can be found here.
Key Considerations from the ACSM:
- Pre-Participation Screening
- Orientation, Education, and Supervision of Members
- Emergency Planning and Procedures
- Professional Staff and Independent Contractors
- Operating Procedures
- Signage
Hallways/Accessibility
In order to be accessible to all
manner of participants, a yoga studio must offer the proper width of hallways,
doors, restrooms, height of water fountains, etc. for a diverse population. It
must also meet standards, such as outward-swinging doors, so that it can be
properly evacuated in case of an emergency.
Access
Rocktown Hot Yoga has one external
door which leads directly into its practice room which remains locked to the
outside. Its main entrance is located in the lobby of its building. This creates
confusion when people use mobile map services to find the studio and also
limits the ability to attract casual customers who may happen upon the studio.
Ideally, the studio would have a “storefront” door which would increase its
marketability.
Additional Design Requests
Ideally, the operators of Rocktown
Hot Yoga would like bigger windows in its practice space and deckage, with
fencing, for the ability to have outdoor practice space. This space would also
offer a place for participants to socialize and give the managers a space to
offer for the hosting of events and parties which could offer additional
revenue through facility usage and special group classes and increase marketing
potential of its programs.
